Just want to share with you the vet's recommendation, he has prescribed 0.12ml milk thistle twice daily to my parrot and he asked me to find omega 3 fatty acid and he will advice me the dosage and change back to Harrison pellet.

I shall try to make the gloop for her this weekend, so that I have the whole day with her to see her reaction. As re the omega 3 product, I found one and would like to seek your comment: http://www.healthydelight.net/index.php?route=product/product&path=33_44&product_id=588

I also found the lily of the desert aloe vera which you have mentioned is good, can you advise me how this could be given to my parrot, should I dilute it 50/50 with water and give to her as her drinking water every day?

Thanks!

I am glad he is prescribing the liquid milk thistle because I am sure that her liver is most likely the problem here. I don't like the fact that he hasn't done a bile acids test to see the extent of the damage but, at least, she is getting liver support.

The omega 3 product is good but I would just feed her the flax seeds by themselves. They love them and they give the same benefit as the oil only you don't have to force it down their throats.

She will, most likely, not eat the gloop the first day. Not all birds do although there is a good chance that a zon would because they are such good eaters. Make it mostly grain at the beginning and cook them very lightly (but make sure the rice and beans are well cooked) so it will look, feel and taste as just grains. Then, as she gets used to it and starts eating it with relish, start adding the veggies gradually until you end up with half grains and pulses and half veggies.

Yes, 50/50 aloe vera in the water is good. Do it for two weeks then decrease it to 1/4 aloe and 3/4 water and do this for a month. After that, normally, the vet does another bile acid test to see if the levels are going down. By the way, make sure the water is good. Tap water is often full of chemicals and not as pure as one would want it so, if I were you, I would give her bottled water (but not distilled).

Thanks Bea for your advices, I have just got my parrot's blood test report, here is the relevant section (I wish to send you a copy but don't know how to attach here):-

Cholesterol 10.8 mmol/L; 417 mg/dL
Uric Acid 156.4 umol/L; 2.64 mg/dL
Triglycerides 4.06 mmol/L; 359.3 mg/dL
Bile Acid 104.48 umol/L; 41.02 ug/ml

My vet didn't mentioned about her liver malfunction, would you mind taking a look and advise me if you spotted any issues.

Many thanks again.

Well, those are all pretty good except for the cholesterol which is too high but there are other values that need to be considered, like total protein, CPK, AST, CBC because I find it very puzzling that she has very high cholesterol but normal bile acids as one usually goes hand in hand with the other (the liver produces and processes cholesterol so if the level is too high, it has to affect the liver function). AST and bile acids are both directly related to liver function and total protein is always high when there is either chronic or long standing liver malfunction so, when you read them all together, it gives you the big picture.

You can send it to me as an attachment to an email (I am not good at computer things so I cannot help you with posting it here -I have trouble myself with all of that stuff). My personal email address is cazeneuvesierra@verizon.net (it's my last and my husband's last name and for the life of me I can't figure out why I was so stupid as to choose such a long and difficult to remember email address!)
